jrollercoasterd, posting in austincommunity @ 02:51 pm: Teacher's Certifications - Opinions on Providers
Oh great and mighty community,

My husband has decided that he wants to become a middle school science teacher. We've already exhausted our Google fu looking for Austin area programs that cater to mid career change individuals. We have a list based both on Google and on recommendations from the AISD site.

However, there's a huge list and we're floundering a bit trying to find which program is the best. Here's where I need your help - any personal recommendations on programs to become a teacher in the Austin area?

He has all of the reqs that most certification programs ask for: Bachelor's degree, GPA, etc. He will be working full time while trying to obtain this certification so anything that has evening and weekends are important. Money and location isn't really an object as long as it's a good program for him. I really want this to be successful.

He doesn't really have a preference as far as school districts go and we don't have children so any insight, rumors or interesting tidbits regarding the different local districts would be much appreciated.

I’m thinking about taking computer classes next year (web design, HTML/CSS, flash maybe). Wondering if anyone has any class recommendations or experience doing classes at ACC, Informal Classes… Obviously want to learn a lot but I’d be balancing this with a full time job and other side projects. Don’t want to feel totally overwhelmed or overloaded. I have considered just trying to teach myself online or buying a book but I don’t think I’m disciplined enough. I’d much rather just go to a class.

I just got off the phone with Austin water via 311 - they said there was a water line break that was causing some flooding in houses, so they shut off service to part of my neighborhood. They had no estimated time when the water would be back on, however she recommended to give them 4-6 hours. If you live near Braker & Lamar, you might call your dog and see if she's got wet paws when she answere the phone.

More reason to drink beer.

Edit:I missed the post about the lights before sorry about that!!

My parents are in town for Christmas and this is our first year staying in Austin for Christmas (instead of going to either of our families places) and we're all needing to get a little more in the holiday spirit :). Any ideas especially dog friendly ones would be GREATLY appreciated! My parents still haven't spent enough time here to really warm up to the city yet, i'm hoping we can change that :).

Cheers!

Edit#2 (sorry!)- Where in Austin would i be able to find a reasonably priced 12 inch cast iron skillet?!

Where would be the best place to find some houseplants?

(strictly indoors-only, I'm not interested in outdoor plants at the moment)

alakuial, posting in austincommunity @ 09:53 am: Dutch food
Hi All,

After searching through the tags with international food I could not find my answer unfortunately so I hope maybe someone can help me out.

I've moved from the Netherlands to Austin about 2 months ago and I really miss some products. I already checked at whole foods and at least I could find decent bread there, which made me really happy. A lot of the products I can buy from online shops but they are insane expensive and I know the H.E.B. used to sell dutch food in the foreign isle but today i heard they took it out.

Does any of you know where I could possible find dutch food?

Thanks in Advance.

Does anyone know where I can get some boxes for moving. Preferably free? I live near Manor and Springdale (don't want to have to go too far to get them).

potato_mink, posting in austincommunity @ 08:47 am: The usual last-minute Christmas gift question (tokyomilk, this time)!
Does anyone know of any stores in Austin that sell tokyomilk products (perfume, soap, etc.)? I would like to buy something for a friend, but it's most likely too late for shipping by Christmas (or at least it would be an exorbitant extra fee for quicker shipping).

Here are some websites with tokyomilk stuff:

THANKS!

I'm hoping to be able to find 2-3 sets of scrubs in the next week or so...does anybody know a good uniform or medical supply store where I can find them for cheap without compromising on quality? I'm on the petite side, if that helps any.

Thanks!

rheavon, posting in austincommunity @ 10:39 pm: 2nd Time Warner Post Today...
...but a totally different issue.

Apparently TWC's contract with Fox in Austin and a few other cities is going to expire (kind of like KXAN a while back). I'm sure they'll end up working something out (meaning rates will go up), but starting Jan 1st, we may have no Fox (except through digi-rabbit ears.

Here is a link to the Keep Fox On Website.

eliset, posting in austincommunity @ 11:01 pm: Menorah at the Capital?
I couldn't help but notice that a giant Menorah was lit at the capital a few days ago when I was down there. Is it actually on state property? Who is sponsoring this?

It strikes me as a separation of church and state issue - I mean, people get into a tizzy when there are nativity scenes on state grounds, but I haven't heard a peep about the 10 foot menorah.

zombienought, posting in austincommunity @ 02:35 pm: Time Warner rate hike?
My Time Warner bill for my Inter-
net service this month is higher
by about 4 dollars than it has
been for the last several years.

I received no notice prior to
this that my monthly fee was
being raised. When I call Cus-
tomer Service, the helpful and
friendly automated voice system
disconnects me as soon as I try
to reach a live operator.

Anyone have any insight about
any of this?

jumpinjessflash, posting in austincommunity @ 09:13 pm: Soup kitchen for Christmas?
Since I'll be in Austin far away from family for the holidays this year, I wanted to volunteer at a soup kitchen or something similar for Christmas Day. I sent an email to Angel House and got no response, anyone know of a place that needs an extra pair of hands and a willing heart this year?

South or Central preferred, only because of the limited bus schedule on Christmas.
